5 August Friday, 2022 - Term 3  Week 3

Principal's Message

Education Week

We had a wonderful celebration of Education Week and the theme, Creative Futures. I would like to send a sincere thank you to the parent volunteers who came and spoke to the students about their profession. It is wonderful for students to be exposed to the variety of jobs open to them in their future. I had the pleasure of watching Bernie Hobbs, a scientist who previously worked as a science journalist on the ABC, present to the Stage 3 classes about atoms and molecules. She was passionate and so engaging and students are excited that she will be back later this term for a follow up session.

Have a look below at the fabulous photos of students dressed as what they would like to be when they grow up and teachers dressed in what they would have been if not a teacher.  We missed having all parents in classrooms to celebrate our fabulous school. In line with our current limiting mingling due to COVID, we are postponing Book Week to a later date. The new date will be advertised as soon as possible.

Gifted and High Potential Education

Each week Year 3 - 6 students who have been identified as high potential in sport participate in a specialised session with the Sports in School (SISA) team. This week the students who are going to the district athletics carnival had targeted training. Good luck to these students at the District carnival!

Lunch Containers

We had a dangerous incident with a child dropping their lunch container on the playground last week. The container was made of glass so it shattered and unfortunately a kindergarten child picked up some pieces. This could have had awful consequences. Please do not send glass containers to school with your child.

Lost Property

The office staff has spent some time cleaning up the lost property area. Lost property is located between the canteen and the hall. Clothing is now placed in a large basket and other items such as drink bottles are placed in a crate.  There is a lot of lost property there and we encourage parents to look at lost property if your child loses any items.

School Maintenance

The school was due to have work done on the damaged playground asphalt in the last holidays but this was delayed due to the rain. The Department of Education Assets Directorate has indicated that they are hoping to start the work this term and this may result in sections of the playground being fenced off. However, the disruption will result in a safer playground.

We will also be having work done on the retaining wall on the school boundary on Stanley St. This wall will be repaired as it has cracks that are of concern. Unfortunately, the structural engineers identified the three camphor laurel trees beside the wall as an issue due to their roots undermining the wall and they will be removed. We have a permit from Burwood Council for the removal.

Exciting Creative Arts News

We were so pleased to find out that our dance group and choir have been successful in their applications for the School Spectacular! Congratulations to all the students and to the wonderful teachers Mrs Winjngaarden and Ms Mitchell who dedicate extra time for these groups.

Lastly, I would like to wish Mrs Kim all the best as she leaves us for maternity leave and the excitement of becoming a mum! I know her class will miss her hugely as will the staff of BPS. Good luck Mrs Kim!! We look forward to meeting the baby.

 Education Week 2022 - 1 August - 5 August

Burwood Public School celebrated Education week in style. This year’s theme was “Creating Future - Education Changes Lives”. Some of our lovely parents came on Tuesday 2 August and spoke to the students about their occupation. The talks were very interactive and the students asked interesting questions. A big thank you to Mr Eels, Ms Sun and Ms Sei who took the time from their busy schedule to speak to the students.

Stage 3 had the amazing Bernie Hobbs who is an award winning science writer and presenter. She visited each stage 3 class and did some amazing experiments with the students.

On Wednesday 3 August, students were invited to dress up in clothes that they would wear in their future career. There was a wide variety of careers displayed. Teachers were involved in the celebration and dressed up as what they would be if they were not a teacher. A guessing competition was held for each class to guess what the teachers were dressed up as. Some were easy while others were hard!!! I wonder if you could guess some???

Premier's Sporting Challenge Ambassadors

Every year, Burwood Public School participates in the Premier's Sporting Challenge. This year, 9 of our Stage 3 students have taken on the role of Sporting Challenge Ambassadors. They proudly received their ambassador badges at a Stage 3 assembly last week.  Our new leaders will be setting up sport activities in the playground at lunchtime to encourage teamwork, social skills and sport skills.

This week our leaders set up tennis, throwing games and ten pin bowling during our lunch breaks. Our leaders are looking forward to introducing new games and activities to the playground throughout the year.

Burwood Plaza Development Submission - 15 August 2022

The development at Burwood Plaza has recently been amended and submitted to Burwood Council. For details regarding the development, please see here: https://datracker.burwood.nsw.gov.au/Application/ApplicationDetails/010.2021.00000044.001/

While the project has undergone some modest changes, the fundamentals of this development being over 1000 apartments, with 5 towers up to 144m in height remain. The P&C has continually expressed concern regarding the impact of this development, most recently at the P&C meeting on 17 June 2022 with Burwood Council representatives. At the June 2022 P&C meeting, the P&C emphasised the impact the development would have on the school and local area when it comes to: (1) traffic congestion, and (2) during construction for a number of years. This is not to mention the numerous other concerns raised in our earlier submissions. As the Developer has not adequately addressed these concerns, the P&C have no choice but to restate its objection and disagreement with the development. The P&C would therefore be making a short submission to Burwood Council to that effect.

If you would like to provide any additional thoughts and comments regarding this submission, please provide your feedback to we would be grateful for your feedback to burwoodpublicschool@pandcaffiliate.org.au by 12 August 2022 (so that it may be collated and placed in our submission to Burwood Council due 15 August 2022).

Online Uniform Shop Consultation

After discussions with the School, the P&C is looking to implement an online uniform shop alongside our physical store to better service the needs of the school community. The P&C would like to set up this online shop as efficiently as possible since proceeds from uniform sales ultimately go back to supporting the students and school community. If anyone would like to provide their input or expertise to this discussion, please contact burwoodpublicschool@pandcaffiliate.org.au.

Primary Ethics Classes - Expression of Interest

Ethics classes are set to continue in Term 3 with classes in Stages 1, 2 and 3! Ethics classes are held on Wednesday mornings from 9:00-9:30am and help children to think logically, disagree respectfully, support arguments with evidence and think about decisions that affect them and people around them. Ethics classes explore these fundamental issues through reasoned discussion about values and principles.

If you would like to know more about Primary Ethics or would be interested in helping, please contact Anuya at anuya.velpanur@primaryethics.com.au. For more information, visit www.primaryethics.com.au.

Children's Crossing - Know the rules

Children’s Crossings are special part-time crossings that play a vital role in keeping our vulnerable road users safe in school zones. They are often manned by School Crossing Supervisors. When orange flags are up:

  • Slow down on approach
  • Stop before the white line
  • Never queue across any part of crossing
  • Passenger set down or pick up not permitted
  • Do not proceed until ALL pedestrians have left crossing

Penalty of $587 and 4 demerits apply for failing to comply.

Click on link below to find out more about Children’s Crossings and how they operate https://youtu.be/ih0rXAqxSZg

They are Counting On Us To Keep Them Safe

Two in three parents are incorrectly securing or restraining their children, unknowingly putting our most vulnerable road users at risk. In the event of a crash, age-appropriate seat belts not only save lives but also reduce risk of serious injury. Don't forget, seatbelt offences are enforced by police and stringent penalties apply.

Burwood Council runs FREE child restraint fitting days at regular intervals.

Venue: Grant Park car park (near Shelley Street entrance) Enfield
