14 October Friday, 2022 - Term 4 Week 1
Principal's Message
Welcome back to term 4. We have a lot on this term and the key dates are in the calendar in this newsletter. Please note that the calendar is updated regularly on the school website.
Some important days for your diary are:
- Presentation Day - Thursday 15 December
- Parent Cyber-safety session - 14 November 6pm via zoom
- Year 6 Farewell night - 13 December
- School Spectacular Concerts 25 and 26 November
- CAPA (dance and music) Concert 8 December
School start time
A reminder that teachers are on duty from 8:30am in the playground. If you need your child to come to school before that time, please organise for them to attend Before School Care. Parents of students who are left unattended by parents before 8:30am may be contacted as this is a safety issue.
P&C Meeting and Event
The P & C meeting will be held on Friday 21st October at 9:00am in the staff room.
The P & C are busy organising a Colour Fun Run that will be held on Friday 18 November. Information is in this newsletter with more to come. This is a really fun event for the kids and a great fundraiser. All parents will be welcome to attend and I know that the P & C will be happy to have as many parent volunteers as are available.
I will be presenting an information session on How Classes are Formed at the P & C meeting. I welcome all parents who can attend to come and ask questions about this process. |
Kindergarten 2023
Kindergarten Orientation sessions are scheduled for Tuesday 25 October and Tuesday 1 November. If you have a friend or neighbour in our area who has not enrolled their child for 2023 please encourage them to do so as soon as possible, through the Enrolment tab on the school website.
Selective High School
Applications for Selective high School need to be completed online at Selective high schools – Year 7 (nsw.gov.au)
The site opens on 18 October and closes on 16 November. Notes have been sent home to all Year 5 students. If you have any questions or need help. Please do not hesitate to contact Ms Nicholau or me through the school office.
End of term Staff Development Days
Last week, the Department of Education announced that it has scheduled an additional Staff Development Day at the end of this term. As a result, students will now finish school on Friday 16 December.
The Staff Development Days will be Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 December. The additional day is to enable staff to participate in professional learning that was put on hold due to COVID-19 staffing pressures and plan ahead for 2023 to ensure we meet the needs of our students.
Mufti Day
Each year the Year 6 students hold special events to help raise money for their Year 6 farewell dinner. On Friday 21 October all students are invited to wear mufti (non school uniform). For fun, the Year 6 are asking students to wear odd socks (a different type/colour sock on each foot). The Year 6 will be collecting a gold coin donation from students who come in mufti.
Returning to school in 2023
I have started planning for staffing for 2023. It is important that we know if any K-5 students will be leaving us at the end of 2022 or will be returning to school late. This information helps us greatly in forming stable classes and is required by the Department of Education for establishing teacher positions. Notes will be sent home with students so parents can confirm that that your child is returning in 2023. It is very important that we have this information as it is used by me to know how many classes and teachers will be needed for next year.

Parent Survey - Tell Them From Me
Our school will be participating in the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys). The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.
Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.
The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.
To access the survey for our school go to: http://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/t4tnq
The survey is available in 22 languages.
Toys that move!
Early Stage One are Scientists! We have been learning about how and why objects move. We investigated objects with different shapes and asked questions and made observations about the toys we were pushing or pulling. We had an incursion where we explored different types of toys. This week, we designed our own toys using recycling materials. We experimented with different shapes, materials and designs.
We hope our students can continue to reuse recycling, to be curious and creative at home!
Dance Update
At the end of Term 3, we received the videos of our regional dance performances. Both our junior and senior dance groups looked wonderful on stage!
Please click on the links below to view the dances:
- Senoirs - Wonka's Wonderful World: https://youtu.be/Wu70cFJJSxQ

Schools Spectacular
Our dancers started their Schools Spec journey yesterday with their first rehearsal at Olympic Park. Our dancers are in a Mary Poppins inspired segment with 230 students from schools across Sydney.
This was our first of many rehearsals this term, with the students learning some of their dance and even making some new friends. They are very excited to get their costumes and for show week at the end of November!

AFL Clinics
We have received funding through a Sporting Schools grant to have AFL coaches come and run clinics with our students in Years 2-5. These free clinics will be run on a Friday morning during sport time for students who are interested in learning a new sport. The clinics will run for four weeks starting next Friday.
If students are interested in learning how to play AFL and developing their skills, they will need to let their teacher know as places are limited!

Our library has wonderful resources to read and many new bilingual books that lots of children can enjoy reading. You can find these books in Burwood Public School’s library next to the picture book section. We would love for students to read and enjoy these bilingual books no matter what language they speak.

SCHOOL FUN RUN CRAZY COLOUR DAY – Friday 18 November 2022
We’re holding the School Fun Run’s Crazy Colour Day as a major fundraising event this year! The event will be held on Friday 18 November from 1:30pm to 3:00pm. We are really hoping to raise $30,000 which will help pay for active play equipment to be installed on the school grounds.
Keep your eyes peeled for the sponsorship forms which will be sent home with your child. Once you have the form, you should sign up for a Student Profile Page at www.schoolfunrun.com.au. To kick off our event, we’re starting our Colour Day with a super easy competition. The class with the most online profiles registered by Friday 21 October will be the first class to run on the day!
Students who raise $10 or more will receive a prize, and the more money you raise the better the prize, and the more you help the school!
We’re looking for all students to participate and we’re organising a great day for our community, so we’d love everyone to come down to support the kids. You can watch this video with your child to see what the event is all about: https://youtu.be/RHhhIuRWqQA

Free 4 week wellbeing working at Club Burwood or Briars Sports Concord
Dear Community Members,
Mood Active are running a FREE 4 week wellbeing working at Club Burwood and Briars Sports Concord
Lift your Mood
- Are you (or maybe someone you know) feeling depressed, anxious or have a diagnosed mood disorder?
- Do you know that regular exercise can be a great help, but you don’t know how to start?
For over 10 years Mood Active has been helping individuals better manage their mental health by advocating exercise as a complementary treatment.
Our Program:-
- Addresses the barriers people have to start and sustain their own exercise habit,
- Utilises best practice & research-proven exercise 'dosage',
- Administers an assessment process & tracks results,
- Helps each person build exercise into their wellbeing strategy.
Prior to COVID, Mood Active had over 400 members and a strong base of Sponsors and Referrers. Unfortunately, the momentum was disrupted throughout COVID due to the lack of face-to-face interactions and we are now rebuilding our services as we come out of the pandemic.
As a key part of this strategy, Julia Bowen has recently joined the Mood Active team as General Manager. Julia has worked in strategic development and executive leadership across a range of industries including Healthcare, Welfare and Social Services, in Australia and overseas. For nearly a decade, she has worked solely in the not-for-profit sector, bringing her skills and experience in leadership, growth, and commercial acumen to worthy causes in Australia and Pacific Region.
Our revitalised face-to-face offering is a 4-week wellbeing program where participants will learn practical tips and tricks on:
- How to get motivated to start and sustain an exercise routine,
- What to do when the going gets tough,
- How to overcome barriers.
We will be offering this program at NO COST in 2 locations.
- Briars Sports Club, Concord - 4 sessions scheduled on the 13, 20, 27 October and 4 November and
- Club Burwood – 4 sessions scheduled on the 11, 18, 25 November and 2 December.
The sessions will be led by a professional coach followed by a couple of exercise tasters. Interested participants can simply register online on the Mood Active website (https://moodactive.org.au ). For display in your rooms, should you wish to do so, we have included our flyers for these events. These flyers are designed for printing on office colour laser printers that can print 2-sided. The flyers should be printed with short edge binding, A4 landscape. Each A4 page can be cut into 3 DL flyers. We have also attached simple A4 flyers for each venue that you can more easily print and hand to clients or email to them.
We still have places that we would like to fill on these courses (as well as more upcoming). If you have clients with mood disorders, we may be able to help them - no formal referral is needed for our programs.
We look forward to providing more opportunities for people to build exercise into their daily lives to improve their mood.
Burwood Council Survey
Burwood Council has just commenced exciting work on the development of a Research Paper into the Culturally Diverse Communities of Burwood and a new Community Engagement Strategy.
This work will help shape our planning for our diverse community, service delivery and how we engage with our community over the next four years.
Your feedback will help us improve our understanding of community priorities, emerging needs and opportunities to improve how we engage with culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) community members. We will also share our findings with the community sector.
How you can help?
- Complete the survey for service providers and community groups to inform our research - it should take about 5 minutes to complete. Your responses are completely confidential. Phone interviews can also be arranged.
- Help with promoting, encouraging or completing the community/business survey in person or via phone. The survey (Your Voice Matters) is available in English (Chinese, Korean and Nepalese versions available soon).
*Those who complete the survey can go into a draw to win 4 x $50 gift vouchers. - Let us know any program you are running or community group (between now and 20 October) that we might be able to attend in person and run a short pop-in consultation activity to invite feedback from CALD community members who might experience barriers to participation.
Help to complete the survey:
- Over the phone - please call our Customer Service Team on 02 9911 9911
- In your first language - call the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) on 131 450 and ask them to call us on 02 9911 9911
- If you are deaf or have a hearing or speech impairment contact us via the National Relay Service - provide Council’s contact number; 02 9911 9911 and you will be connected to us.
